As experienced builders, we’ve worked with a range of construction materials over the years, but light gauge steel frames have become our preferred choice over traditional timber. While timber has long been a staple in the industry, steel offers a level of precision, durability, and consistency that timber simply can’t match. From improved resistance to pests and fire to its long-term structural reliability, light gauge steel provides a smarter, more efficient building solution. In this post, we’ll explore why we believe steel frames are the future of construction.
Weight is the biggest constraint when building a tiny home on a trailer. The maximum allowable Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM), which includes the weight of the trailer is 3.5 tonnes for dual axle trailers and 4.5 tonne for tri axle trailers.
That means every kilogram matters! Choosing lightweight materials is essential, and that’s where light gauge steel frames offer a clear advantage. They are up to 50% lighter than traditional timber frames.
Saving weight on the frame leaves a larger weight allowance for fitting out a tiny home with items such as cabinetry, feature timbers and double glazed windows.
Our light gauge steel frames are made in Melbourne using Australian Bluescope steel and engineered to meet Australian standards for structural integrity and compliance.
Unlike timber, which can suffer from natural inconsistencies, warping, or weak points, steel offers uniform strength in every piece. Additionally, steel has a significantly higher strength to weight ratio compared to timber, making it a superior choice for structural durability.
This gives us confidence and peace of mind in the structural reliability of our tiny homes, which are designed to be towed over thousands of kilometres across Australia

Steel frames offer precision and flexibility, making them an ideal choice for our tiny home frame kits.
Engineered to exact specifications, our frames are accurate to the millimetre and do not warp or bow. This level of precision means there’s no need for additional work like buzzing down walls to get them level, everything fits as it should from the start. In addition to their structural reliability, our steel frames are fully customisable, allowing you to tailor every detail to suit your lifestyle and vision.
Light-gauge steel frames are a great choice for our DIY frame kits!
